Confessions.

Sun Jun 29, 2008, 7:55 PM
I have a confession to make...

These last few portraits I've been doing? I've been using a grid for drawing the lineart, and then coloring over it.

I've always thought using a grid was sort of cheating--isn't the grid system how they teach art to people who aren't remotely artistic?

And now, I'm scared I can't draw without a grid. Or that I can't draw anything good.

Thoughts? Is using a grid to draw cheating? Is it not real art? Should I label which of my pictures I use a grid on and which I don't? Or is it already obvious?

In other news, I no longer feel attraction. But I can't change the mood for some reason, right now.

  • Mood: Attraction
  • Listening to: Kim Dong Ryul ft. Alex - Like a Child
  • Reading: A Pirate/Ninja Love Story that I wrote
  • Eating: Dippin' Dots Rip Off
  • Drinking: Tea, of course

I hear the mood icons are stuck for many people.

I believe we already discussed gridding? I don't personally care. If it'd make you feel better then you could mention the methods you used in the comments section.

Hmmmmmm. You don't personally care as in you have no opinion, or you think it's legit? I just sorta feel like it's facilitated tracing.

I don't really know. Tracing is cheating, yes, but I don't think using grids can be considered as the same thing. Still, I hope you'll realize soon, that you can draw very well without grids too. :D

Thanks. :D

Hmm, interesting. I'll keep that in mind! Thanks for the comment and the compliment! :D

I don't think using a grid is cheating. Renaissance masters used grid systems and their old school projectors to draw compositions on canvas or boards. I've done it before in classes for projects as well. It's a good training tool to help you look at space and how things relate to each other in that space. Eventually you wont need the grid, and when you take it away, you'll find you can still draw without it, because you've learned to LOOK at what you are drawing.
:iconbechedor79:
Hmm, I'm glad you think that way. Do you think that looking at something square by square helps with an overall feel though? Or is the fact that you're looking at the details instead of the whole what ultimately helps?

I think the grid helps you look at details, but it also helps you see how the details of an object relate to the whole. You can look at an eye that perhaps takes up 1/2 a width of a square, and then look at the mouth and see the mouth is twice as wide as an eye (for example). And then you can say 'Okay the mouth is a square wide, and then the face's width takes up 3 1/2 squares. The grid also helps you place lines and details, since you can look at the grid and go "Okay, the hairline starts in the upper third of this square...and compare that to where the chin starts or something. The grid is, IMO, very academic when used as a training tool~ it helps you learn to LOOK. Which is key for life drawing skills. As for overall feel...that comes more into play when you work with line quality, color, texture, etc.

Hopefully that makes sense and doesn't sound like jabber... O_o

I think that helps a lot and makes sense and I really appreciate you writing it out. It makes me feel a lot less like ZOMGI'mnotanartist. :)
